The New York University
eighth-ranked men's fencing team and women's fencing team concluded their regular season at the Columbia Quad Meet on Wednesday in New York City.
The men collected two victories out of three matches. While they lost 14-13 in a tight competition against second-ranked host Columbia University, the Violets defeated Vassar College 22-5 and Sacred Heart University 21-6.
The women's squad posted one victory, triumphing 19-8 over Vassar. However, they fell 14-13 to Sacred Heart and 21-6 to #3 Columbia.
"I'm really proud of all our athletes who fought through a long regular season," Head Coach
Ben Bratton said. "In our first match, the men's team lost in a nail-biter to Columbia but carried the momentum from that match to strong finishes against Vassar and SHU."
Bryce McClain and
Andrew Sledeski posted the most wins for the men's foil team, recording 6-3 records for the night.
Ian Adler led epee with 7-1 and
Kevin Zu led saber with a 5-1 mark.
Renee Wu was the leading Violet on the women's foil squad with a 3-0 record.
Sophia Dondisch totaled a team-high five wins (5-2 )in epee while
Hannah Hoverman led the saber squad (5-2).
Against Vassar, the women's foil team scored a perfect 9-0 mark as Wu,
Chiara Codazzi and
Polly Adler each won all three of their bouts.
McClain, Sledeski and
Farr Dickson also achieved a clean 9-0 for men's foil against Vassar.
"There is a lot of work to do ahead of NCAA Regionals and Championships at Harvard next month, but I think we're in a position to have a strong showing there," Bratton said.
Next up for the Violets is the NCAA Division III Regional Championships hosted by Harvard in Cambridge, MA, on Sunday, March 12.
