Hope Neale's 87th-minute goal led the
19th-ranked New York University women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw against third-ranked Carnegie Mellon University at home in Newark, NJ, on Sunday, October 29.
In the opening minutes of the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest, the pressure was on from the Tartans. Emma Shirzad had open space for CMU, but her shot was blocked on the goal line by
Amanda Mickwee.
"That was a challenging game," said Head Coach
Scott Waddell. "We stuck to our identity and played through adversity. To get the goal at the end and tie things up was an amazing feeling. CMU is #3 in the nation and to fight back after going a goal down was impressive."
The game went into halftime scoreless. CMU led in shots 7-5 and had four corners while NYU had none.
At 51:53, the Tartans got on the board with a tap-in by Maria Askounis. An in-swinging corner landed in the box by Ayana Curto who slid it to Askounis for the advantage.
However, NYU continued to press. Then, With three minutes to go in the game,
Kelli Keady sent a ball onto the feet of
Gabriella Funk. At 86:12, Funk laid it to Neale who sealed the deal by sending the ball into the upper right corner of the net. The goal came from the only shot for NYU in the second half.
The assist from Funk was her 21st all-time and broke the program record in career assists.
"I'd also like to tip my hat to G Funk who broke the career assist record and the career points record with her assist today," added Waddell. "She is an amazing player and an even better person. We're all super proud of her."
Tyler Hawkins made four saves for the Violets in the draw.
CMU kept the shot advantage the entire game, ending 12-5, 5-3 on goal.
