On Sunday, the New York University men's and women's fencing teams wrapped up a full weekend of fencing with the Eric Sollee Invitational in Cambridge, MA, hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The women's team recorded four victories out of six matches, defeating NCAA Division I Boston College 14-13, as well as Division III Brandeis University 15-12, MIT 16-11, and Stevens Institute of Technology 19-8. The Violets fell by the same score, 22-5, to two DI teams: Brown University and
twelth-ranked Duke University.
Playing a major role in the women's success was the foil squad, posting a 33-21 individual match record.
Renee Wu led foil with 7-2.
Annika Santos,
Chiara Codazzi and
Maria Stamos each logged six victories.
Sophia Dondisch registered the most victories for Violets in epee (11) while
Leanne Chan led the saber team (seven).
"Our women's team really had a breakthrough today coming away with some very strong victories," men's and women's head coach
Ben Bratton said. "They've showed a ton of resilience over the season and I am excited to see things begin to finally come together for them."
In the men's competition, the
eighth-ranked Violets won 17-10 over Stevens. However, they lost by just one point (14-13) to both
11th-ranked Boston College and Brandeis. Against the hosting Engineers, NYU fell 17-10.
The Violets also competed and lost against two DI squads:
ninth-ranked Duke (17-10) and Brown (15-12).
Farr Dickson led NYU's foil team with nine wins while
Ethan Kim did the same in epee with eight.
Faaris Hussain recorded a team-best seven victories in saber.
NYU's fencing teams will next compete in the Columbia Quad Meet in New York City on February 15, where they will face host Columbia University in addition to Vassar College and Sacred Heart University.
