The New York University men's and women's fencing teams competed against NCAA Division I Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, on Saturday.
Harvard's men,
ranked first across all collegiate divisions, defeated the #8 Violets 18-9. However, NYU's saber squad was able to triumph 5-4, led by
Jamie Ren (2-1) and
Brian Kim (2-1).
NYU's foil and epee teams both lost 7-2.
Oliver Hu posted a 2-1 mark for the best record in foil, while
Ian Adler also went 2-1 in epee.
In the women's competition, the Violets were also defeated 18-9 by
ninth-ranked Harvard.
Despite the loss, NYU's foil team posted a 5-4 victory, spearheaded by
Maria Stamos' perfect 3-0 and
Polly Adler's 2-1 record.
The Violets fell 6-3 in epee and 8-1 in saber.
Sophia Dondisch and
Allison Dunlap each went 2-1 in epee and saber, respectively.
"The men's and women's teams went up against very strong and experienced Harvard teams and gave a great effort," said Head Coach
Ben Bratton. "We came up short in both, but looking ahead to MIT tomorrow I think we are in a good place."
Both fencing teams will compete again tomorrow at the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA. In addition to MIT, the Violets will face Brown University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Duke University, Brandeis University, and Boston College.
