Belle Pellecchia poured in a game-high 20 points while
Natalie Bruns and
Caroline Peper had 19 apiece as New York University's
eighth-ranked women's basketball team defeated seventh-ranked University of Rochester, 80-67, on Sunday afternoon at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
The University Athletic Association (UAA) victory pushed NYU to 3-2 in league play and 13-2 overall.
Peper's 19 points were a career high and Pellecchia grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for the fourth double-double of her career. Bruns added eight boards, a career-high six steals, five assists and four blocks to go with her season-high-tying 19 points.
NYU's offense was clicking early, taking a 13-6 lead on a triple from Bruns at the 6:15 mark of the first. UR came within one, 15-14, two minutes later, but NYU closed the quarter on a 12-5 run to lead 27-19 after one.
The Violets held Rochester to eight points on 2-of-13 field-goal shooting in the second, winning the quarter 17-8 for a 44-27 halftime advantage.
UR outscored NYU 11-5 over the opening 3:28 of the third which cut its deficit to 11 (49-38) after a Katie Titus three-pointer. The Violets responded with an 8-2 run of their own to regain momentum, maintaining a 64-47 lead entering the fourth.
Rochester never came closer than 12 throughout the final quarter as NYU ran away with its 12th double-digit win of the season.
Pellecchia's final line included seven assists, two steals and two blocks to compliment her 20-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Erica Miller finished with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting (2-of-4 from deep) while
Jenny Walker chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and a block.
The Violets shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three-point range and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the stripe in the win.
NYU has now won five of its last six meetings with Rochester and improved to 10-18 in the all time series with today's win.
The Violets will look to make it three straight UAA wins when they host Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, January 27, at 5:30 pm at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
