Violets suffer first loss of 2022-23

New York University's top-ranked women's basketball team fell to #15 University of Chicago, 71-57, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Friday evening in Chicago, IL.

The Violets shot a season-low 32.8 percent from the field while Chicago's Grace Hynes dropped a game-high 22 points as the Maroons secured the upset on their home floor.

Chicago scored the first seven points of the night to set the tone, but the first quarter ended with the scored knotted at 12-12.

The Maroons opened the second on a 10-4 run which gave them a 22-16 edge with 5:08 remaining in the opening half. Hynes later connected on a jumper with 17 seconds left in the second to give Chicago a 37-27 halftime lead.

NYU came within five, 37-32, after Pellecchia nailed a triple early in the third. However, the Maroons' advantage eventually ballooned to 17 (51-34) on Marissa Powe's free throws with 1:34 left in the stanza.

Chicago led 53-37 entering the fourth and, despite NYU winning the final frame 20-18, held on for a lopsided victory over the Violets.
