Stockton Edges Baseball in Close Battle

Violets fall 12-11 as Ospreys walk off with the win

New York University's baseball team built a 7-0 lead early, but couldn't hang on as Stockton University walked off with a 12-11 victory on Wednesday night in Galloway, NJ.

This was the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with NYU taking the first two contests.

NYU got off to a hot start, scoring its first run on a Ryan Carr RBI single who was later driven in on a double to right center from Grant Berman.

The Violets built on this momentum, plating five more in the second for a commanding, 7-0 advantage. Zane Baker started it off with a run-scoring double, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Russell Burton. Burton had quite the inning, later stealing home for NYU's third run of the frame. Nick Argenziano also had an RBI base hit with another run coming in on a wild pitch.

Stockton responded in a big way though, erupting for eight runs of its own in the bottom of the second to quickly erase the deficit and go up 8-7.

Three more Osprey runs came across in the fourth, giving the hosts an 11-7 edge halfway through the game.

NYU began to claw back in the sixth, first with Carr scampering home on a passed ball. Alex VanLandingham drove in another on a single to left, bringing the Violets within two (11-9).

Argenziano continued to swing well, tying the game with a two-run double to left in the top of the seventh. Inning eight was scoreless for both teams, setting up an exciting final frame.

NYU threatened in its half of the ninth as Carr drew a one out walk and stole second. Argenziano then legged out an infield hit with two outs, setting up a first-and-third situation. However, Stockton induced a groundout from the next batter to kill the rally.

The Ospreys quickly pounced in the bottom half as Ryan Mihelbach hit a walk-off homer to left center.

Both Carr (3-for-5) and Argenziano (3-for-6) had three hits with Carr scoring four times.

Burton, VanLandingham and Nate Pallotta added two hits apiece.

Andrew Reid had a strong outing on the mound, stimying the Stockton offense throughout the middle innings. He didn't give up a run or a walk, allowing just one hit while striking out four across three innings pitched out of the bullpen.

NYU fell to 18-13 on the season while the Ospreys improved to 16-19-1.

Next up for the Violets is their final home game of the season, welcoming New Paltz to Brooklyn for a 7:00 pm first pitch at Maimonides Park. NYU's seniors will be honored pregame in a Senior Night ceremony.
