The New York University women's tennis team concluded the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Sunday as the sixth-seeded Violets faced off against eighth-seeded University of Rochester, emerging victorious 5-2.
The seventh-place match wrapped up NYU's trip to the three-day event held at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, FL.
The bout began in favor of the Yellowjackets as two early wins at doubles put them ahead of NYU.
Jimena Menendez and
Carol Plakk won the No. 2 doubles match for the Violets in just nine games (8-1). However, Rochester returned with a pair of wins at first and third doubles.
Karina Jensrud and
Anastasiia Balyk fell 8-5 and
Phoebe Su and
Jamaica Buyse were edged 8-6.
The Violets returned in singles with much success by serving up four straight wins without dropping a single set. Su topped Stephanie Kim 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles, followed by Menendez winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Clinching the final two points were Plakk (6-2, 6-2) at first singles and Jensrud with the deciding victory at the second flight (6-3, 7-5).
Lynn Robinson and
Ana Leonard's matches were halted when play concluded. Robinson was a game away from closing out her No. 5 singles match (7-5, 5-2), and Leonard was down in a tight second set (4-6, 4-5).
NYU previously faced Rochester this season in a dual match, winning on the road 8-1 on March 26. The Violets conclude the UAA Championship in seventh place and finish the season with a 4-6 record.
