The New York University Softball Team recorded its first University Athletic Association (UAA) victory of the season, defeating Carnegie Mellon University 8-6 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2, at the College of Staten Island.
The Violets (7-14, 1-5) dropped the opening game to the Tartans (13-9, 4-3).
"I love the way we competed today," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James.
In the nitecap, the Violets got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but were behind 5-4 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
That's when a four-run outburst put NYU ahead to stay.
The rally began with
Brianna Roman drawing a one-out walk.
Sophia Leon was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
Bella Dunning's sacrifice fly tied the game and a Tartan error allowed the go-ahead run to score. That opened up an opportunity for
Erin Scott to blast her first home run of the season and give the Violets some breathing room.
"We came through with the big hits when we needed them in game two," James offered.
Carnegie Mellon plated one more run and NYU survived a bases-loaded top of the seventh as winning pitcher
Marina Egbert (4-7) induced a game-ending groundout.
Kalena Paredes had two hits and an RBI in the contest.
The Violets also had an early lead in the opener, but could not hold on as the defense allowed three unearned runs in a lack of support for hard-luck loser
Maggie Swan (3-4).
"In the first game we were a hit or two away from the outcome being different," James surmised.
On the day,
Lauren Kong led the offense with four hits, two RBI and a walk.
Elisabeth Smith had three hits.
The two teams are scheduled to complete their four-game series on Sunday at 11:00am on Staten Island.
