After dropping both ends of a doubleheader on Friday, the New York University softball team rebounded to win a single game on Saturday and finished off the four-game series against Emory University with a 6-5 win on Sunday in Atlanta, GA.
Sunday's University Athletic Association (UAA) contest started off slowly for the Violets (11-18, 5-9), as the host Eagles (17-17, 6-10) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
However, a six-run outburst in the top of the third gave NYU the lead for good.
Bella Dunning drove in the first two runs with a single.
Erin Scott doubled in the next run and eventually scored on a wild pitch, while the final two runs were plated on
Madi Hand's double.
Emory inched back to within 6-4 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
After the Violets squandered a one-out, two-on situation in the top of the seventh, Emory mounted a rally in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff double and a following single brought the Eagles within one. But,
Marina Egbert set the next three batters down in order to preserve the Violet victory.
"I love the way we competed the last two days," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "We worked through a lot of tough situations and I feel like we're really ready to come around."
Egbert came on in relief of starter
Maggie Swan in the fifth inning and allowed only that one earned run to record her first save of the season. Swan (5-6) picked up the victory, also allowing only one earned run in her 4.2 innings of work.
Dunning, Hand,
Samantha Burggraf,
Sophia Leon, and
Hannah Lee each had two hits for NYU.
"We are continuing to see growth as the year's gone on," James added.
The Violets return to action next weekend for their final UAA action of the season as they host Brandeis University at the College of Staten Island. The four-game series begins at 5:00pm on Friday, April 22, and continues with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
