New York University's softball team took on Emory University on Friday to begin a University Athletic Association (UAA) series in Atlanta. Emory won by three runs in both games, taking the opener 7-4 and winning game two 9-6.
After a scoreless first inning to open the day, NYU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when
Madi Hand singled to right center and drove in
Kalena Paredes.
The Eagles loudly responded with seven runs on eight hits and an error in the bottom half, accounting for all of their scoring in the game.
NYU scored a single run in the third after
Bella Dunning reached home when the runner on first was caught stealing. The Violets scored two more in the fourth on a Hand sac fly and an EU wild pitch, but that's as close as they would come.
Hand had both of NYU's RBIs in the opener while six different Violets recorded a hit.
Marina Egbert held Emory scoreless in every inning other than the second, striking out four across six innings in the circle.
In game two, Emory went ahead 3-0 in the first inning on four singles and a hit batter. NYU scored its first run in the third after
Sophia Leon walked and
Hannah Lee doubled to put runners on second and third. Then,
Erin Scott reached on an error, bringing around Leon while Lee was thrown out at the plate.
The Violets jumped ahead in the fourth behind RBIs from Hand, Lee and
Lily Candelaria, along with an unearned run via error for a four-run inning and 5-3 lead entering the fifth.
NYU plated its final run of the game on a Leon sac fly in the fifth before the Eagles rattled off five runs in the bottom of the inning to go up for good and sweep the day.
Lee and Hand had two knocks each in the nightcap to lead a 10-hit outing for the Violets.
Maggie Swan pitched 5.1 innings and fell to 4-6 on the year, but held Emory scoreless for three straight frames.
Emily Stone recorded the final two outs of the sixth without allowing a run.
NYU and Emory continue the series with a single game tomorrow beginning at 2:00 pm in Atlanta.
