The New York University Baseball Team kept its season-opening winning streak going with an 11-6 victory over Stockton University on Tuesday, March 15, at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, FL.
Playing on the New York Yankees Spring Training site, the Violets upped their record to 5-0 on the young season.
John Gassler (1-0) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and went six strong to pick up the victory. He allowed only one hit and an unearned run in six innings, leaving the game with NYU ahead 8-1.
His battery mate,
Grant Berman, provided the big blow of the early innings, recording a two-run triple in the sixth.
Stockton (6-4-1) pulled to within 9-6 in the top of the eighth and put the tying runs on base. But,
Jack Hassett came on in relief and shut down the Ospreys, going the final 1-2/3 innings and allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out three.
The Violets scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to help secure the win, with Berman adding an RBI double. He finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Alex VanLandingham added two hits and two stolen bases for the Violets.
Ryan Carr also had two hits, while
Zane Baker and
Jacob Singer each recorded two stolen bases.
"We were successful today when we played situational baseball," said Head Coach Doug KImbler. "We got into trouble when we got behind on hitters. Overall, it was another step in the right direction."
The Violets will play a doubleheader in Bradenton, FL, on Wednesday against Utica College. The first game is set for 12:00pm.
