In what has been a glorious season for the New York University Women's Basketball Team, the regular-season finale did not disappoint.
Celebrating Senior Day and a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, the Violets (22-1, 13-1) ended their near-perfect regular season with an 80-67 victory over Brandeis University (9-15, 3-11) on Saturday, February 26, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
After falling behind 4-0, the Violets scored the next 14 points and were never seriously threatened throughout.
NYU led by 11 after the first quarter (21-10) and at halftime (40-29), were ahead by 14 (51-37) after three, and led by as many as 17 points in the fourth.
The Violets, who are ranked #7 in the nation by both the
Women's Basketball Coaches Association and
D3hoops.com, finished the regular-season with eight consecutive wins and will attempt to carry that momentum into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
"Any time you win a championship in a league like the UAA, it builds confidence heading into the NCAA Tournament," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "And, we don't rely on any one player. We've had outstanding performances from different people at different positions. That depth will be a key moving forward."
The regular season ends with NYU as UAA Champions for the first time since 2007 (co-champions) and outright champions for the first time since 1997 (when NYU went on to win the Division III National Championship).
Prior to the game, NYU honored graduating seniors
Meghan McLaughlin and
Bianca Notarainni, as well as graduate student
Alyssa Alvarez, who graduated last year when Covid-19 canceled the basketball season.
"The word that comes to mind with this group is 'grateful'" Barber explained. "These three have been through a lot, playing without a true home facility and missing a season due to the pandemic. With us having such a large group this year, they had to lead and help the newcomers understand the NYU culture, and I couldn't have asked for a better three people than these three."
Who and where NYU plays in the NCAA Tournament will be revealed on Monday.
