New York University's basketball programs won all four of their contests this weekend after the Women's Basketball Team defeated Carnegie Mellon University, 70-56, on Sunday, February 13 in Pittsburgh, PA.
The win and Emory University's loss today clinched at least a share of the UAA title for the Violets, who haven't won the Association since 2007.
"We had our minds set on completing the weekend sweep and accomplished it with a very tough and relentless defensive effort," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "I'm so proud of how this group handled road games in the UAA."
The Violets are currently ranked #7 in the nation by the
Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and #9 by
D3hoops.com. Their 19-1 record and 10-1 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play have them atop the league with three games left in the regular season.
Today's matchup saw a close first quarter as CMU tied the score at 11 after Anisha Chintala scored on a fastbreak with 3:16 on the clock. The Violets then posted six unanswered points to close the first up 17-11.
NYU opened the second on a 12-2 run, including five points each from
Jordan Janowski and
Erica Miller, for a 29-13 advantage with 4:14 to play until halftime. The Violets held CMU to 30.8 percent shooting in the second leading to a 37-23 halftime edge.
The Tartans pulled within eight (44-36) late in the third, but NYU immediately mounted eight unanswered points to close the period ahead 52-36 and didn't look back, securing the season sweep of Carnegie Mellon.
"Going 6-1 on the road in this league isn't a small feat," Barber added. "But, our team's maturity, competitiveness and leadership has put us in a great position in the UAA standings."
