Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stephens Catches Fire as Men's Hoops Beats York

Three-point records fall as Violets improve to 8-0

Cinque Stephens scored a career-high 27 points to lead New York University's men's basketball team in a 98-62 victory at York College in Jamaica, NY, on Wednesday night.

Stephens shot 9-of-13 from the field and 8-of-10 from distance, adding six rebounds and four assists. His eight three-pointers tied the individual single-game program record while the team's 22 made triples and 50 three-point attempts snapped program records that were set earlier this season.

The undefeated Violets fell behind 13-12 five minutes into the game after a trey from York's Terrell Fullerton, but NYU responded with 18 unanswered points—capped off by a trifecta from Stephens—to take control with 11:33 left in the first.

York came back within nine, 30-21, after another Fullerton triple just under the 10-minute mark but NYU quickly shut down the run and went on to lead 58-34 at halftime.

The Cardinals opened the second half on an 11-2 run which cut their deficit to 15 (60-45) with 16:45 to play. That was the closest the hosts would come the rest of the night, however, as the Violets ran away with their fifth 30-plus-point win of the season.

NYU improved to 8-0 on the year with the win. The team currently leads NCAA Division III in scoring margin (30.8) and is off to its best start since 2015-16.

Spencer Freedman notched 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-8 from deep with eight assists, four boards and two steals.

Zay Freeney and Holt Bashinsky added 14 points apiece while Nikola Lipovic had 12 and Quinn Clark finished with 10 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocks.

NYU's bench outscored York's 55-10 and the Violets won the rebounding battle 48-28, forced 16 turnovers, scored 23 fastbreak points, 21 second-chance points and had 30 assists on 35 made field goals.

The Violets will look to maintain their perfect record when they return home to play Hunter College on Saturday, December 10, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
