It was a memorable day at Gaelic Park for so many reasons on Sunday.
The New York University women's soccer team defeated Washington University in St. Louis 2-0 on Sunday, its second University Athletic Association (UAA) victory this weekend. The Violets defeated the University of Chicago 2-1 on Friday.
This marks the first time that NYU has ever beaten both UAA opponents in the same season.
"We did a better job of finishing this weekend," said Head Coach
Michele Canning. "In our previous UAA games, we played really well and games were evenly matched. But, we weren't putting our chances away. I think in both of these games we put away the chances that we had."
Celebrating Senior Day on Sunday, the host Violets did not disappoint as five players:
Julie Beedle,
Caitlin Fong,
Gabriella Funk,
Tate Jordan, and
Nikki Lee were honored in pregame ceremonies.
It was a pair of honorees, Jordan and Funk, who put the Violets ahead to stay. Just 12:02 into the contest, Jordan scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season on a team-leading fifth assist from Funk. The duo are now co-leaders with 17 points each.
NYU doubled its lead in the second half as
Hunter Hoelscher took a pass across the goal from
Elizabeth Argenziano at 66:54 to complete the scoring.
Riley Felsher was in net for for the Violets and recorded the shutout without facing any shots. The Violets out-shot Wash U 11-0, and led 6-2 in corner kicks.
In addition to Senior Day, NYU women's soccer held a
Mitchell and Friends Foundation Awareness Game. Canning's nephew Cole was diagnosed with Mitchell Syndrome in November 2021. Cole and his family were on-field for a halftime ceremony, and he and his sister Aubrey were presented with replica jerseys and gift bags from the team.
"I appreciate the efforts and support of so many people for allowing us to have this event," Canning said. "Our administration, our players, the Washington players, and their coaches all gave of themselves. We are just trying to get the word out as much as possible. There have been 16 people diagnosed with the disease, but I'm sure there are many more undiagnosed. The genetic test is out there and we want people to know that Mitchell Syndrome exists."
The Violets conclude the regular season with a contest against Brandeis University on Saturday, November 5, in Waltham, MA, at 2:30pm.
