Rushi Shah Wins Badminton Fall 2021

Shah Continues Badminton Dominance

Rushi Shah continued his dominance within the NYU Badminton scene with yet another Intramual Badminton victory on December 3rd, 2021.

NYU Intramurals hosted another tournament for the growing NYU badminton scene with many students from the first tournament trying their hand at claiming the top spot this time around. 35 participants made up the double-elimination pool filled with stiff competition.

After several hours of tournament play, Shah survived the field once again to win it all, capturing both tournaments this semester. Shah's dominant play resulted in him winning every set and game he played.

Despite Shah's dominance, the overall culture and popularity for the sport badminton has seen new heights this semester with staggering numbers across both Intramural tournaments, on the at-capacity roster for Club Badminton, and during free play sessions. The events have had a social and competitive atmosphere and welcomed players of all levels. Some only played a few times, while others had previous experience in badminton competitions. This allowed the event to foster a social yet competitive atmosphere that adheres to the goals, motto, and purposes of the department.

"It's a great environment!", Shah stated after his win. "I've made a lot of friends over the past two tournaments."

Intramural Student-Employee, Majo Magro, who supervised both Badminton tournaments stated, "Badminton seems to be a sport students are interested in and enjoy. It was really nice to see everyone getting involved and having fun." She continued, "Even people who were not participating in the tournament were playing in the open court and making the event better [for engagement]. Both events had a great outcome and I'm very happy I was a part of it! Can't wait for more badminton events in the Spring!"

Jadah Manon, another Intramural Student-Employee who aided Magro in coordinating the event agrees with the overall feeling, stating, "This was my first time overseeing Badminton and it was such a fun time! Everyone seemed to have a blast and even if they didn't win, they continued to practice on the open court. The sportsmanship was definitely there and it was a blast! I can't wait to oversee badminton again next semester and maybe try to play too!"

The NYU Intramurals program has multiple badminton events planned for Spring 2022.
