Bobby Hawkinson's (Frankfort, IL/Marist) 18-point, 14-rebound double-double and
Harrison Whatley's (Mount Pleasant, SC/Porter Gaud) season-high 12 points powered the New York University Men's Basketball Team to a 95-61 win over York College (NY) on Tuesday, December 7, at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
The Violets picked up their third-straight win, showcasing their depth as the bench posted 53 points and the team shot 47.3 percent (35-for-74) from the field.
"I thought we played really well for about 28 minutes," said Head Coach
Dagan Nelson. "I was really proud of our team. We had a season high tonight of 24 assists, really shared the ball."
A jumper from York's Roki Mendoza Familia tied the score at 6-6 four minutes in, but NYU mounted an 18-2 run immediately after to establish a 24-8 advantage at the 12:19 mark of the first.
The Cardinals never came closer than 13 points for the remainder of the period as Hawkinson poured in 10 of his 18 points in the first half, leading NYU to a 56-26 lead at the break.
Hawkinson then scored the first six points of the second, ballooning the score to 62-26 with 16:15 to play. York kept fighting, however, scoring 35 second-half points while holding the Violets to just 39 to close the game strong.
"We've got to do a better job of finishing games and playing a full 40 minutes," Nelson added. "We've got to have more defensive discipline, but overall I was pleased."
Whatley shot 4-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-2 from behind the arc en route to his season-high 12 points, also pulling down five boards.
Jacob Sussman (Mount Olive, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) chipped in 13 points (5-for-10 FG, 3-for-5 3FG) while
Alex Maticiuc (Monaco, Monte-Carlo/St. Thomas More School (Montville, CT)) added 11 off the bench.
Hayden Peek (Poughkeepsie, NY/Choate Rosemary Hall) had the best game of his young career, finishing with career highs in points (nine), assists (six) and rebounds (four).
Holt Bashinsky (Birmingham, AL/Mountain Brook) also put up eight points in just 12 minutes of action.
The Violets return to the court this Friday, December 10, for a road game against Hunter College at the Sportsplex in Manhattan. Tip-off commences at 7:00 pm.
