Hobart Hands Men's Basketball First Loss of Season

Violets Fall 88-60 on the Road

Following a 4-0 start to the 2021-22 season, New York University's Men's Basketball Team traveled to Geneva, NY, to take on Hobart College on Saturday, November 20. The Violets fell 88-60 as the Statesmen held NYU without a scorer in double-figures.

The Violets started off strong as their first four buckets of the game came from long range, including two from Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep), giving them a 12-5 edge at the 16:12 mark of the first. Hobart responded with a 12-2 run over the next six minutes, putting them ahead 17-14 halfway through the opening half.

After a Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL/Marist) bucket, the Statesmen rattled off 12 unanswered points to extend their advantage to double-digits (29-17). The hosts went into halftime up 39-24, as they held NYU to 25 percent shooting in the frame.

"Hobart went on a 25-4 run midway through the first half that we didn't respond to," commented Head Coach Dagan Nelson.

A Jack Lesure jumper five minutes into the second half brought Hobart's lead to 20 (51-31) and they didn't look back from there. The Statesmen shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half while continuing to stymie the Violet offense. They limited NYU to a 33.3 percent clip across the final 20 minutes to secure the one-sided victory.

Riley Demps (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman) was the Violets' top scorer, finishing with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting. Hawkinson added seven points and a game-high-tying 11 boards.

Cinque Stephens (Dallas, TX/Wilbraham & Monson) scored seven points in just seven minutes of action off the bench for NYU.

"We learned a very valuable lesson today," added Nelson.

NYU returns home for their next contest, playing host to Maritime College on Tuesday, November 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.
