Three games, three double-digit victories for New York University's Men's Basketball Team.
The Violets (3-0) hosted Pratt Institute on day one of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament, running away with an 83-40 victory at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility on Saturday, November 13.
Big-man
Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL/Marist) continued his stellar start to the season with an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double, while
Jacob Sussman (Mount Olive, NJ/The Lawrenceville School) added 18 points of his own to pace the offense.
It was a low-scoring affair at the start, with the Cannoneers' (0-2) Patrick O'Gorman canning a pair of free-throws at the 11:30 mark, cutting NYU's lead to 12-8.
The Violets responded with 14 unanswered points, capped off by a Sussman three-ball, to pull ahead 26-8 with 6:16 remaining in the first. NYU controlled the rest of the period, but a deep three from Pratt's Daniel Golub with one second left brought them within 15 (34-19) at the break.
Pratt narrowed the gap to 12 just over two minutes into the second, but NYU rattled off an 8-2 run immediately after to put the game out of reach. The Violets shot over 50 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes (20-of-39) and held Pratt to just 13 field goals on the night to cement their biggest win of the young season.
Sussman (7-of-10) and Hawkinson (8-of-11) were both very efficient en route to their 18-point outputs, while rookie
Holt Bashinsky (Birmingham, AL/Mountain Brook) added a career-high 12 points off the bench.
Harrison Whatley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Porter Gaud) made all three of his field-goal attempts, finishing with seven points and four rebounds as well.
Despite the score, it was a chippy contest that saw multiple technical fouls issued.
"There were many teachable moments from the game tonight that we must learn from moving forward," commented Head Coach
Dagan Nelson.
NYU is back at it tomorrow (Nov. 14) for the Championship Game of the Tip-Off Tournament against Marywood University, who defeated John Jay this evening. The Violets tip off tomorrow at 2 pm.
