The New York University women's basketball team boosted its bid for a postseason berth with a 91-73 road win over Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Saturday, February 29, in Waltham, MA.
The Violets, who ended the regular season with a 20-5 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the UAA, finished in second place in the UAA behind only the University of Chicago (11-3).
The Violets fell behind the Judges (13-12, 3-11) early in Saturday's contest. They trailed by as many as five before pulling within one, 16-15, after the first quarter.
Jenny Walker's (Sausalito, CA/Redwood) layup opened the second quarter and gave NYU its first lead.
NYU again fell behind, 20-17, but used a 24-8 run to end the quarter and go up 41-28 at halftime.
The Violets went up by as many as 20 points before settling for a 68-52 advantage after three quarters.
Annie Barrett's (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) jumper with just over three minutes to play gave NYU its biggest lead of the afternoon, 86-64, and Brandeis never got closer than 18 the rest of the way.
Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School), sho scored a game-high 21 points, became the 17th player in team history to reach 1,000 when she converted a layup with 1:09 remaining in the opening quarter. She also finished with six rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block.
Katie Foos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) (17),
Lauren Koyama (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) (12) and Walker (10) each scored in double figures for NYU. Walker added 10 rebounds and a career-high six blocks, while Koyama grabbed a career-best six rebounds.
Barrett finished with a game-high 10 assists. She now has 420 for her career, nine short of the team record (
Kaitlyn Read (University Park, TX/Highland Park) - 429).
The Violets also connected on a team-record 17 three-pointers in the contest.
Bids for both the NCAA and ECAC Championship Tournaments will be announced on Monday.
