The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by Carnegie Mellon University 84-71 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, January 31, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
The Violets (7-10, 0-6) trailed by 10 points at halftime, 43-33, and by 11, 50-39, with 17:45 left in the game.
However, NYU put together a 19-8 spurt and tied the game at 58-58 on
Jimmy Martinelli's (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) layup with just over nine minutes remaining.
The Tartans (9-8, 2-5) responded by scoring the next 14 points and never relinquishing the lead.
NYU cut its deficit to six points, 72-66, on
Ethan Feldman's (New York, NY/The Salisbury School) layup with 3:58 left to play, but could not get any closer.
Feldman finished with a game-high 24 points, connecting on 10-of-15 shots from the field.
Harrison Whatley (Mount Pleasant, SC/Porter Gaud) and
Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep) each had 10 points.
Bobby Hawkinson (Frankfort, IL/Marist) led NYU with nine rebounds.
"The difference in the game was our 18 turnovers," said Head Coach
Dagan Nelson. "We did a great job of battling back. But, turnovers have been our issue all year and it was our bugaboo tonight."
Trent Suddeth led five Tartans in double figures with 23 points.
The Violets return to action on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, when they host Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off for the the UAA contest is set for 12:00pm at the Sportsplex.
