Softball Team Completes Regular Season

Violets Split with Carnegie Mellon and Post 20th Victory

The New York University softball team completed its 2019 regular season by splitting its University Athletic Association (UAA) doubleheader with Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, April 28, at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, NY.

The host Violets (20-13, 8-9 UAA) were defeated by the Tartans (13-25, 5-15) 6-1 in the first game, but rebounded for a 10-8 victory in the second contest.

Scotty McGee, who started both gamed for Carnegie Mellon, was masterful in the opener, holding the Violets to only two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven. NYU scored its only run in the sixth inning on a Tartan fielding error. Caroline Saccacio and Kalena Paredes had the only hits for the Violets, each recording a double.

Cassi Parulis pitched the final three innings in relief of starter Karissa Zubulake (7-6) and allowed only one run.

In the second game, the hosts finally solved McGee and put a five-spot on the board in the second inning when they parlayed three walks, two hits and an error into a lead they never relinquished. Maggie Swan, who started in the circle for NYU, had the big blow of the inning, a bases-loaded double that plated two runs.

Carnegie Mellon pulled to within 5-4 after scoring three unearned runs in the top of the fourth. But, the Violets quickly responded in the bottom of the frame by plating five. Ashley Mains had a two-run single and Paredes knocked in a run with a single of her own.

The Tartans did not go quietly, however, scoring three more runs to pull within 10-8 in the top of the sixth.

Swan went the first four innings and raised her record to 6-2. Parulis followed with two innings of relief before giving way to Olivia Mould, who pitched a scoreless seventh for her second save of the season.

"I think our improvement throughout the season was evident," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "We have established this program as a true contender in one of the toughest conferences (UAA) in the nation, and I look forward to what's ahead."
