The New York University baseball team defeated visiting SUNY Canton 6-3 on Saturday, March 9, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
NYU improved to 4-0 with the win and completed the three-game sweep of the 'Roos following Friday's doubleheader sweep. The three games on Coney Island were the first three contests of the year for SUNY Canton.
Tim Salvadore gave the Violets their fourth strong starting pitching performance in as many games, allowing no hits and just one earned run in 4.2 innings of work on the mound. Freshman
John Gassler relieved Salvadore with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning and struck out the only batter he faced to end the first inning of his collegiate debut.
The Violets scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game.
Ryan McLaughlin and
Zane Baker each had an RBI in the inning, while the other two runs were plated without an RBI.
After the 'Roos closed to within 4-1, NYU added an insurance run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-1 lead. Those runs were knocked in by Lubbock, TX, natives
Jack Walter and
Colman Hendershot.
SUNY Canton answered with a pair of runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 6-3, but
Will Jauss and
Joseph Prisco pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to halt any chance of a comeback. Prisco's 1-2-3 ninth inning earned the sophomore his first career save.
Through four games this season, the NYU pitching staff has a 1.41 ERA.
NYU will return to the diamond on Monday, March 11, when it hosts Farmingdale State College. First pitch against the Rams is slated for 4pm back at MCU Park.
