The New York University women's basketball team will be playing for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship for the second-straight season, following a 69-59 semifinal round victory over Misericordia University on Saturday, March 2, at Cabrini College in Radnor, PA.
NYU (16-10) used a career-high 30 points from
Janean Cuffee and 14 three-pointers to get past Misericordia (23-6) and into Sunday's championship game. The 14 triples give the Violets 200 for the season, which is a new program record, breaking the previous mark of 191 by the 2009-10 squad.
The Violets led 11-2 early and 17-11 after the first quarter as Cuffee tallied nine points in the first 10 minutes.
Cuffee, a sophomore, had 16 points by halftime to go along with
Lauren Koyama's 12 first-half points off the bench to help NYU grab a 36-27 lead after two quarters.
The lead grew to 17, 46-29, midway through the third quarter. But, the Cougars wouldn't go away. They cut the deficit to 55-45 after three quarters and down to four, 57-53 with just under five minutes to play in the game.
Cuffee answered with five-straight points to give the Violets a comfortable lead and NYU held off Misericordia down the stretch to clinch the win and a return trip to the ECAC Championship game.
Last season, the Violets fell to William Paterson in the final.
NYU will battle top-seeded and host Cabrini in Sunday's Championship game. Tip-off against the Cavaliers is scheduled for 1pm.
