Baseball Wins on Opening Day

Violets Defeat John Jay 16-4 at MCU Park

The New York University baseball team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull away from John Jay College and defeat the Bloodhounds 16-4 on a frigid Thursday, February 28, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

Ford Ladd was the Violets' opening day starting pitcher and tossed six innings, scattering four hits while allowing just two runs.

NYU scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the third, but the Bloodhounds tied it quickly with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning.

From there, it was all NYU as the Violets scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and added one run in each of the fifth and six innings, before running away with the contest during their 10-run seventh.

Offensively, 2018 University Athletic Association (UAA) Player of the Year Colman Hendershot and Francis Prior each went 3-for-4 to pace NYU. The duo combined for seven RBI with Hendershot picking up four and Prior adding three.

Joseph Prisco came in to relieve Ladd in the seventh and pitched a perfect inning. Aaron Ackerman and Will Jauss also came out of the bullpen for the Violets and neither allowed an earned run.

The Violets are slated to take the field for four games this weekend, weather permitting. NYU is scheduled to host Vassar College in a doubleheader on Saturday and Maritime College in a twin-bill on Sunday.
