Women's Basketball Falls to WashU

Violets Drop UAA Home Opener, 76-61

The New York University women's basketball team was defeated 76-61 by Washington University in St. Louis in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, January 18, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.

Janean Cuffee scored a game-high 28 points, but NYU (9-5, 1-3 UAA) struggled offensively, shooting 19-of-64 (29.7%) from the field and 5-of-27 (18.5%) from three-point range as the Bears improved to 10-5 on the season and remained undefeated through four UAA games.

WashU scored the first five points of the game and never trailed, leading 17-13 after the first quarter and 38-25 at halftime.

The Violets cut the Bears' lead to 10, 54-44, after three quarters and to within six, 62-56, on a pair of free throws from Annie Barrett with 5:50 to play.

WashU answered, however, with nine unanswered points to regain their double-digit lead and ultimately win the contest by the 15-point margin.

Cuffee drained 4-of-9 three point attempts and the 28 points tied her career high. She was joined in double figures by Katie Foos, who finished the contest with 15 points and also added a team-high-tying six rebounds. Barrett and Cuffee both played the entire 40 minutes.

Madeline Homoly led WashU with 27 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double. The forward was 13-for-17 from the field and also dished out four assists.

NYU returns to action on Sunday, January 20, when it hosts the University of Chicago. Tip-off against the Maroons is scheduled for 2pm at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
