The New York University women's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2018 campaign, falling 2-0 to host Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday, September 7, in Hoboken, NJ.
NYU (2-1-0) allowed two first-half goals to the Ducks (2-1-0) and was never able to claw back from the deficit.
Julia Panko struck first for the hosts, finding the back of the net unassisted in the 18th minute. Panko's teammate, Fiona Matthews doubled the Stevens lead in the 33rd minute when she headed in a corner kick from Zisi Komar.
The Violets had their best chance of the game early in the second half as
Alex Benedict fed
Maddie Peña for a breakaway, but Pena's shot was denied by Ducks' goalkeeper Izzy DiDario.
DiDario made that one save to earn her first shutout of the season. NYU goalkeeper
Sophia Danielsen recorded a pair of saves in the loss.
Stevens out-shot the Violets 10-5 in the contest as the Ducks' Taylor Schaad took a game-high four shots and Benedict and Peña each tallied two to lead NYU.
The Violets return to action for the second day of the Stevens Engineering Cup on Sunday when they take on 22nd-ranked Swarthmore College at 2pm back in Hoboken, NJ.
