The New York University men's soccer team fell to Carnegie Mellon University 1-0 in its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener on Saturday, September 29, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
The host Violets (7-2, 0-1 UAA) had its seven-game winning streak snapped, while the Tartans (7-0-2, 1-0), ranked #10 by the United Soccer Coaches, remain unbeaten in 2018.
Neither team was able to tickle the twines in the first half, but Carnegie Mellon managed to break the scoreless deadlock when Cooper Tubiana received a pass from Jack McCambridge and knocked it in from the top of the box past NYU goalkeeper
Grant Engel. That tally came at 58:17 and was the only score of the day.
"We just weren't able to clear the ball on that goal," explained Head Coach
Kim Wyant.
Engel finished with five saves, while Tartan keeper Alec Lam recorded two. Carnegie Mellon out-shot NYU 16-6 overall.
Maxi Rodriguez was the lone Violet to attempt more than one shot, connecting on two with one landing on goal.
Matteo Russo recorded NYU's other shot on goal.
"We had a good first half, but we let down our guard just a little bit in the second," Wyant said. "They're a good team and very well-coached. They displayed great movement off the ball and you can tell that tactically they are very sound."
NYU returns to action next Saturday, October 6, for its first UAA road contest. The Violets will travel to Cleveland, Ohio, to face host Case Western Reserve University at 11:00am.
