Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Splits at Ramapo

Violets Fall to Middlebury and Defeat the Host Roadrunners

The New York University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, September 21, at Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ.

NYU first took on Middlebury College and lost to the Panthers in three sets (25-19. 30-28, 25-22). The Violets then faced host Ramapo and defeated the Roadrunners in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-17).

The Violets (11-4) had their six-match winning streak snapped vs. Middlebury (5-2), but the outcome was closer than the 3-0 score would indicate.

NYU trailed by as many as 11 points in the opening set against the Panthers and pulled within five before succumbing.

The Violets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and increased it to eight points, 20-12. However, they could not maintain the advantage as Middlebury's 12-3 run gave them set point. To its credit, NYU did not quit at that point as back-to-back kills by Katie Goyette and Maddie DeJong put NYU on the brink of victory. It was not to be, however, as the teams stayed within one point of each other until Shea Golden's service ace clinched the set for the Panthers.

NYU led late in the third set by a score of 19-18, but Middlebury scored the next five points en route to the match victory.

Gretchen Kincade led the Violets with eight kills, while Goyette and Stella Alverson each had 11 assists..

The second match against Ramapo (4-9) had a different ending, as the Violets swept their hosts.

NYU led the entire first set, but trailed by two early in the second. However, utilizing a set-ending 8-1 streak, the Violets were able to clinch game two.

The final set was tied 4-4 when the Violets scored the next two and never relinquished the lead, increasing it to eight points on several occasions.

Nazzerine Waldon led the way with 10 kills for NYU. Goyette (17) and Alverson (15) each posted double-digit assists. Jacqueline Kupeli added 14 digs.

The Violets open up University Athletic Association (UAA) play with three matches hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, next weekend. NYU will take on Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday, September 29, at 2pm followed by a tilt with Emory University at 4pm. NYU will conclude weekend action with a match against the University of Rochester on Sunday at 10am.
