Violets Improve to 20-1 in Non-UAA Action

The New York University baseball team defeated John Jay College 13-4 on Wednesday, April 18, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

The victory put an end to a season-long three game skid for NYU, which improved to 22-7, while John Jay's record now stands at 10-14.

NYU looked to be in control early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 4-0. Three of those runs came on back-to-back home runs from Colman Hendershot and Jonathan Iaione.

John Jay answered quickly, however, with four runs of its own in the top of the second to knot the score at 4-4.

The Violets broke the tie on a sacrifice fly from Hendershot in the home half of the inning and never looked back, using a six-run third inning to break the game open and go ahead 11-4. The big blow in the inning came of the bat of Ryan McLaughlin, as the junior crushed a bases loaded triple to left centerfield to score three runs.

Six different pitchers threw for the Violets on Wednesday, including Zach Cohen, who tossed three shutout innings, while striking out five Bloodhounds.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Iaione crushed an RBI-double off the wall in left centerfield to put the Violets ahead 12-4 in the sixth inning.

- Joseph Prisco (1.1 innings), Braeden Duff (1.0 inning), Paul Gadaleta (1.0 inning), and Will Jauss (1.0 inning) combined with Cohen to shut out the Bloodhounds over the final 7.1 innings.

- Hendershot and Iaione's home runs was their third of the season to tie Coltrane Tait for the team lead.

- NYU's catcher, Scott Hilbrandt, threw out a pair of Bloodhound baserunners.

The Violets return to action on Friday, April 20, when they travel to Waltham, MA, to open up a four-game University Athletic Association (UAA) series against Brandeis University. First pitch is slated for 3:00pm.
