Men's Basketball Nipped at Albertus Magnus

Violets Squander Late Lead; Fall to 3-5

The New York University men's basketball team fell to host Albertus Magnus College 77-76 on Thursday, December 6, in New Haven, CT.

Cam Moore's eight-foot shot to win the game at the buzzer fell just short as NYU (3-5) was defeated for the fourth-straight game. The Falcons improved to 7-3 with the victory.

A dunk from Dom Cristiano put the Violets ahead 76-69 with 1:18 to play, but Albertus Magnus scored the final eight points of the game to earn the win. The Falcons tied the game with 21 seconds left and then took the lead on a free throw with four seconds left.

"You have to go through the bad to get to the good," said Head Coach Dagan Nelson. "I think a lot of this is mental at this point, not physical. I told our guys that we need to play a full 40 minutes and no one is going to give us the game. Tonight, I thought we played well for 37 or 38 minutes."

NYU inbounded the ball to Moore, who went nearly the length of the court before his game-winning attempt came up just short.

The Violets led 45-40 at halftime in a wild game which featured 56 fouls between the two teams.

"We knew coming in it was going to be an odd flow and they pressed a lot," added Nelson. "Execution wise, we failed a few times, especially down the stretch."

A three-pointer from Jule Brown put NYU ahead by eight, its biggest lead of the second half, with just over five minutes to play. From there, the squads went back and forth until the Falcons' late run.

Ethan Feldman, who was playing in his first game of the season, led the Violets with 19 points, while Cristiano recorded his second-straight double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) and fourth of the season. Moore scored 14 points on Thursday, all of which came from the foul line (14-for-14).

Jahmerikah Green-Younger led all scorers with 21 points for Albertus Magnus.

NYU returns to action on Tuesday, December 11, when it hosts Hunter College at the Sportsplex. Tip-off is slated for 7pm.

"I'm looking forward to getting healthier and taking the court on Tuesday for the final game of the semester," concluded Nelson. "It's important we come out ready to play and start some momentum we can take into the exam/holiday break."
