The New York University women's basketball team defeated visiting Rutgers University-Newark 63-49 on Monday, December 3, at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
NYU's win was its fourth in the last five games, and the Violets' overall record now stands at 4-2 while the Scarlet Raiders dropped to 4-3.
The Violets led by three after one quarter and four at halftime, but outscored Rutgers-Newark 19-12 in the third quarter to take an 11-point lead into the final period.
"We got back to playing our game in the third quarter," said Head Coach
Meg Barber. "We won the 50/50 balls, got stops and moved the ball up the floor well."
In the fourth quarter, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to cut the margin below 10 as the Violets rolled to an 18-point win.
Janean Cuffee scored 19 points to lead NYU, while
Casey O'Connor chipped in with 11 to help lead the Violets to their second home win in as many chances this season.
"Casey and Shaye (McGoey) both stepped up and made some big momentum plays," added Barber. "Rutgers-Newark refused to let up, so we needed to make big plays and we were able to."
Faith Ashby scored 23 points for the visitors to lead all scorers on Monday.
The Violets are slated to return to action when they continue their five-game homestand on Tuesday, December 11, vs. Hunter College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5pm back at the Sportsplex.
