The New York University women's volleyball team completed play at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday, November 3, in Rochester, NY. The Violets fell to Brandeis University in five sets and finished in sixth place in the eight-team tournament.
After splitting its two matches on Friday, the Violets (18-16) took a two-set lead on Saturday but couldn't hold on in a 17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-8 loss to the Judges (13-17). The sixth-place finish was the highest for the Violets since taking fifth place in 2014.
Despite winning the first two sets, NYU never was able to get ahead in the third. The Violets did score the first point of the fourth set, but Brandeis scored the next four points and never relinquished the lead.
In the deciding fifth set, the Judges broke a 2-2 tie by scoring the next five points and holding on to the lead the rest of the way.
"It was the same tale as yesterday, being great at setting the tone early," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "However, as the match went on we began to make too many unforced errors that Brandeis was able to capitalize on. Give them the credit for not giving up and playing a great game."
Nazzerine Waldon (13) and
Maddie DeJong (10) produced double-digit kills for the Violets.
Jacqueline Kupeli had a team-high 23 digs, while
Katie Goyette led the way with 22 assists.
"We will build off this result as we await an opportunity to play in the ECAC Tournament," Brown explained. "And, if given that opportunity to extend our season, we will be all in."
Today's match ended the Violets' 2018 regular-season schedule. The team will now await word on a potential postseason ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Tournament bid.
