The New York University men's basketball team was edged by Rosemont College 69-66 on Tuesday, November 27, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility in Brooklyn, NY.
The Violets (3-3) led by as many as 10 points in the first half and by seven in the second, but could not hold off the visiting Ravens (2-4).
"I told the guys after the game that I take full responsibility," said Head Coach
Dagan Nelson. "We are making the same mistakes over and over again and, as a coach, it's on you to work to fix that. We turned it over 23 times tonight and that's becoming an all-to-common theme."
Cameron Moore opened the game with a three-pointer as NYU raced out to a 19-9 lead.
However, Rosemont embarked on a 21-10 run and took its first lead of the game, 30-29, with 6:54 left in the first half. The game remained close and was tied 36-36 at the break.
The Violets took their biggest lead of the second half, 47-40, on
Harrison Whatley's three-pointer with 13:24 remaining. NYU maintained a lead until the Ravens tied the score, 61-61, with 4:27 left, then went ahead 65-62 following a pair of free throws by Jalil Myers.
Moore's two free throws brought the Violets to within one, 65-64, with 2:48 remaining, but neither team scored again until Myers hit two more free throws with 29 seconds left.
Dom Cristiano's bucket brought NYU within 67-66 with 17 ticks left. Then, Jacob Simonson hit two free throws for Rosemont with 11 seconds remaining.
After, an NYU timeout,
Jimmy Martinelli's potential game-tying three-point attempt was off the mark as was a desperation three by Moore.
Cristiano finished with a team-high 23 points while also adding six rebounds. Moore finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds (along with Martinelli).
Bobby Hawkinson added 10 points for the Violets, while
Jule Brown contributed a game-high seven assists.
"Dom was great tonight on the interior," added Nelson.
NYU out-rebounded Rosemont 44-25, but committed 23 turnovers to the Ravens' 10.
"We played well enough defensively to win," concluded Nelson. "But, once again, we turned it over way too much and shot poorly from long range (4-for-20), which is going to happen."
Myers led Rosemont with 20 points.
The Violets return to action this Saturday, December 1, when they host Alfred State College. That contest is set to tip-off at 4pm at the Sportsplex in Manhattan.
