The New York University women's volleyball team played its final two matches of University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #2 on Sunday, October 14, at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Violets (14-11, 2-5 UAA) dropped their first match to Washington University in St. Louis (18-4, 5-1 UAA) in three sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-21) before defeating Brandeis University (8-14, 0-7 UAA) in a five-set match (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 19-25, 15-9).
The Bears led the entire first set of the opening match. The Violets did manage several one-point leads in the second set, but could not hold off Washington's comeback.
In the final set, the Violets overcame an early five-point deficit and went on to take several one-point leads. However, with the score tied 16-16, the Bears went on a three-point run and never trailed again.
Nazzerine Waldon led the Violets with 11 kills, while both
Stella Alverson (15) and
Katie Goyette (11) had double-digit assists.
Jacqueline Kupeli added 14 digs.
The second match was a much more competitive affair, as the Violets and Judges split the first four sets.
In the decisive fifth set, NYU scored the first four points and never looked back en route to the clinching victory.
"Everything in the UAA is earned. Nothing is given," said Head Coach
Andrew Brown. "Today, all the small details added up to the win against Brandeis. Our team's ability to adjust and switch our player matchups allowed us to continue to play team volleyball and at the end walk away with a big win."
Abby Ausmus led three Violets in double-digit kills with 14. Waldon contributed 11 and
Maddie DeJong had 10. Alverson paced the squad with 27 assists, while Kupeli had a match-high 25 digs.
The Violets return to the court when they travel over (or maybe under?) the Hudson River to face Montclair State University in Montclair, NJ, on Thursday, October 18. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
