Men's Soccer Falls at #12 Carnegie Mellon

Violets Drop UAA Opener

The New York University men's soccer team lost its University Athletic Association (UAA) opener 3-1 on Saturday, September 30, at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA.

The loss was the second straight for the Violets (5-2-1), who had previously won five in a row. Carnegie Mellon, which is currently ranked #12 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, improved to 7-1-1 on the season.

CMU got on the scoreboard early, scoring in the third minute as Zack Masciopinto put the Tartans ahead 1-0. NYU goalkeeper Grant Engel made the initial save on a shot from Anthony Gulli, but Masiopinto was able to corral the rebound and shoot it past Engel.

The score remained 1-0 until the 51st minute when Greg Bellwoar beat Engel to double the Tartans' lead. Bellwoar's goal was also assisted by Gulli.

NYU became just the third team to score on Carnegie Mellon this season when Owen Smith found the back of the net in the 56th minute to cut the Tartans' lead in half. Smith took a beautiful through-ball from Luke Dunn and quickly knocked it past CMU goalkeeper Alec Lam.

Ten minutes after Smith's goal, the Tartans were able to regain their two-goal advantage when Masciopinto scored his second goal of the game.

Engel made four saves in the loss, while Lam made his only save late in the contest on a shot from Ricardo Mitrano.

NOTABLES:

- Smith's goal was his fourth of the season, which leads the squad.

- Dunn's assist was the first point of his career.

- CMU outshot the Violets 13-6 (7-2 in shots on goal) and took nine corners to NYU's three.

- Seven yellow cards were given out in the contest.

NYU returns to action when it hosts New Jersey City University on Tuesday, October 3. Kickoff against the Gothic Knights is slated for 7:30pm at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
