The New York University women's soccer team defeated Vassar College 2-0 on Sunday, September 3, in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Violets are now 2-0 this season and have posted consecutive shutouts.
Violet goalkeeper
Michaela Brickley made five saves in recording the shutout. In Friday's 4-0 opening day win over St. Joseph's-LI, Brickley was not forced to make even one save.
"Vassar is a good opponent and they created several good chances," explained Head Coach
Michele Canning. "Michaela made one really tough save, deflecting it over the cross bar and keeping us in the lead."
Alex Benedict, who scored NYU's first goal on Friday, did it again on Sunday. With just 6:17 gone in the contest, she chipped in a short shot over Brewers' goalkeeper Fiona Walsh.
"Alex is feeling confident and creating a lot of chances," Canning added. "She worked very hard during the summer."
The final score came late in the game as
Charlotte Herbertz recorded her first of the season at 76:27. She put it into the net following Walsh's deflection of a blistering shot by
Julia Raith.
"I like the intensity we're playing with right now," Canning said.
NYU out-shot Vassar 16-8 overall and 9-5 in shots on goal.
NOTABLES:
- Benedict took a game-high five shots, while both Herbertz and
Marquel Love had two. Three of Benedict's were on goal and two of Herbertz's were on target.
- NYU squeezed out a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks.
"Our attack has improved since last season and it's showing on the field," Canning concluded.
The Violets return to action this weekend when they particpate in the Stevens Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ. NYU faces Swarthmore College on Saturday, September 9, at 12:30pm, and host Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:30pm on Sunday, September 10.
