Men's Soccer Wins Third Straight

Violets Stay Unbeaten with 3-1 Victory Over Old Westbury

The New York University men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Tuesday evening, September 12, in Riverdale, NY.

The victory was the Violets' third straight after a scoreless tie in their season opener. Old Westbury's record now stands at 1-2-0 after three games.

"We're playing well, but there's plenty of room to get better," said NYU Head Coach Kim Wyant. "We have a lot of depth and we are implementing a lot of the things we work on daily. It's great to see."

Owen Smith opened up the scoring in the 10th minute for NYU. The sophomore found himself in the right place after a shot from Pedro Goldberg was saved by the Panthers' goalkeeper. The ball deflected right to Smith and he was able to redirect it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

NYU captain Ricardo Mitrano doubled the Violets' lead when he connected on a penalty kick in the 61st minute. The junior struck the ball into the right corner after the Old Westbury goalkeeper dove left.

"Ricardo was excellent tonight," exclaimed Wyant. "He was undoubtedly the man of the match."

The Panthers were able to get a goal back four minutes later, capitalizing on a clearing miscue from NYU. Mike Rodrigues intercepted a pass at the top of the box, turned towards the goal and blasted a shot past Violet goalkeeper Grant Engel.

In the 69th minute, Maxi Rodriguez scored his third goal of the season to help the Violets regain their two-goal advantage. The play started when Richie Rambarran sent a cross into the box to Smith, who deflected the ball to a wide open Rodriguez. The freshman was able to finish and give the Violets a 3-1 lead.

Engel made three saves en route to his third victory of the season. Mike Warren, the Panthers' goalkeeper, helped keep his team in the game with 10 saves, including a point-blank stop with the Violets leading by one in the second half.

Through four games this season, NYU has allowed just 17 shots on goal.

"There's a lot of data out there that shows the less shots you allow, the less goals you allow," added Wyant. "Our student-athletes are intelligent, they get it. They're doing a great job blocking shots and not allowing chances."

NYU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts SUNY Maritime. Kickoff is slated for 8:30pm at Gaelic Park in Riverdale.
