Softball Team Wins Two at Drew

Violets Take Pair 6-2 and 5-3

The New York University softball team won both ends of the doubleheader against Drew University on Wednesday, April 5, in Madison, NJ.

The Violets (10-6) snapped a three-game losing streak with the 6-2 and 5-3 victories.

The first game did not start well for NYU, as Drew (3-13) scored two runs in the first inning. However, starter Karissa Zubulake did not allow any more runs the rest of the way.

The Violets went ahead with three runs in the top of the fifth, two scoring on RBI singles from Diana King and Samantha Sicignano and the go-ahead tally coming in on a sacrifice fly by Caroline Saccacio.

NYU added three insurance runs in the seventh on a wild pitch and RBI singles by Molly Webber and Ashley Maines.

Zubulake, who went the full seven innings, allowed six hits and struck out six without walking a batter.

The second game went only five innings due to darkness, and again the Rangers took an early 2-0 lead.

The Violets' comeback began with a sacrifice fly by Saccacio in the third. Then, in the fourth, King's three-run homer capped a four-run frame as NYU secured the nitecap.

King also picked up the five-inning complete game on the hill.

"We played well today," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "There was also a lot of timely hitting as people really stepped up today."

NOTABLES:

- At the plate, King finished the day 4-for-7 with four runs scored, four RBIs, a stolen base, and a home run

- Webber was 5-for-7 with a run, RBI and double.

- Sicignano started both games and went 3-for-6 with a RBI and double.

NYU returns to action this weekend when the squad opens University Athletic Association (UAA) competition. The Violets will play doubleheaders against host Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, on Friday at 3:00 pm and Saturday at 12:00 pm.
