The New York University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent Emory University on Saturday, April 22, in Atlanta, GA.
The Violets (16-12, 4-8 UAA) lost game one 9-1 and were defeated 12-6 in the second game of the twinbill.
"It was a tough day," said NYU Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "When we hit well, we struggle to pitch. When we pitch well, we struggle to hit. We need to play more complete games."
Emory (27-12, 9-7 UAA) scored five runs in the first inning of game one and never looked back. The Eagles led 9-0 through five innings before NYU scored a run in the seventh when
Ryan McLaughlin hit an RBI single to score
Jack Elias.
NYU scored the first four runs of game two, but was unable to hold on to its early lead.
The Violets got on the scoreboard in the first inning when
Jack Walter scored on an RBI groundout from
Colman Hendershot. They added three more runs in the second inning on RBIs from Elias,
Will McKenna and Walter. Emory answered with three runs in the third and seven more in the fourth to take a comfortable 10-4 lead.
NYU closed the margin to four when Walter smacked a two-RBI double in the sixth inning, but the Eagles once again answered with a two-run home run from Brian Hernandez to make the final score 12-6.
"We struggled to hit with the bases loaded this weekend and they did well in those situations," added Kimbler. "We shot ourselves in the foot too many times."
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
-
Eli Edwards tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit.
- Hendershot went 2-for-2 with a double to right center field and was also hit by two pitches.
- Walter reached base twice via a pair of walks.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- Elias led NYU with three hits.
- Walter,
Jonathan Iaione and
Coltrane Tait each recorded multi-hit games, finishing with two apiece.

NYU is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 25, when the Violets take on Yeshiva University in a pair of seven-inning contests at MCU Park. Game one is slated to begin at 5:00 pm.
