The New York University baseball team split a doubleheader with Vassar College at Terry Park in Ft. Myers, FL, on Saturday, March 18. NYU won game one 14-2 before falling 15-14 in 11 innings in game two.
The games concluded the Violets' annual spring break trip to Florida. The team won four of seven and will return home with an 8-3 record. Vassar is now 3-3 on the season.
Junior captain
Cameron Serapilio-Frank started game one for the Violets and delivered the best pitching performance from an NYU starter this season, tossing seven innings and scattering four hits while allowing just two runs. The score was tied 2-2 after five innings when the Violets' offensive leaders,
Adrian Spitz and
Jonathan Iaione, took over. The duo combined for eight RBI over the final four innings to help NYU break the game open.
Game two was all Vassar early as the Brewers jumped out to leads of 3-0, 8-2 and 12-6. NYU trailed by five heading into the bottom of the ninth where they scored five times to tie the game and force extra innings. Vassar retook the lead in the top of the 11th and the Violets were unable to come back one final time.
Ryan McLaughlin tallied three hits to lead NYU, while
Colman Hendershot led the squad with four RBIs caming on a second-inning grand slam.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Serapilio-Frank struck out six Brewers and earned his second win of the season.
- Spitz was 5-for-6 and had seven RBIs in the win, which is a new NYU Division III record. It was his third game of the season with at least four hits.
- Iaione finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Jack Brouwer each singled in their only at bats.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
- Iaione and
Coltrane Tait each recorded two hits.
- Iaione and
Bobby Moskow both tripled in the loss.

Max Juang came into the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth and hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Paul Gadaleta tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen to keep the Violets in the game. He entered the contest with two men on base and no outs and was able to get out of the jam in just three pitches.
NYU is scheduled to return to action on Thursday, March 23, against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. First pitch at MCU Park is scheduled for 3pm.
