Violets Open Up Spring Break Slate with Win in Florida

The New York University baseball team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stout 17-6 on Sunday, March, 12 at Terry Park in Ft. Myers, FL.

The neutral site game vs. UW-Stout (2-5) was the first of seven that the Violets will play over the next six days in Ft. Myers.

NYU (5-0) crushed 21 hits in the win, its most since bringing back varsity baseball in 2015. Senior Adrian Spitz and sophomore Colman Hendershot each tallied four hits and all nine members of the starting lineup recorded at least one.

"We were fortunate enough to get down here early and get back in the mode offensively and that showed today," said NYU Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "We capitalized on their mistakes."

The Violets jumped out to a 10-0 lead scoring at least three runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Junior right-hander Cameron Serapilio-Frank started the game on the mound for NYU and pitched five innings, giving up just four hits and one run to earn his first win of the season.

"Pitchers have to throw strikes when they're on the mound with a big lead," added Kimbler. "Cameron settled down and got outs when we needed them."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Spitz and Hendershot each led the Violets with three RBI.

- Hendershot and Jonathan Iaione each scored three times, while four other Violets scored twice.

- Ryan Allen pitched a scoreless sixth inning out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit.

- With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, the NYU defense turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

NYU gets right back in action tomorrow, March 13, with a pair of games against the University of Dubuque. First pitch of game one is slated for 9:00am.

"We're excited to get back out there tomorrow morning," concluded Kimbler. "If we stick to our philosophy we'll be in good shape."
