Late Rally Leads Baseball to Opening Day Win

Violets Come from Behind to Defeat John Jay

The New York University baseball team rallied to defeat John Jay College 7-4 on Opening Day, Wednesday, March 1, at MCU Park in Brooklyn.

The Violets scored a pair of runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to turn a late two-run deficit into a three-run victory in their season opener.

"We always felt like we were in the game and just a couple of big hits away from tying it or taking the lead," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "We played good situational baseball in the late innings and were able to get a big Opening Day win."

NYU trailed most of the game after allowing the Bloodhounds (1-2) to score three times in the first inning. The Violets scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings to narrow the margin to 3-2 before John Jay added a run in the fifth inning to double its lead to two.

Jack Elias worked his way around the bases to close the margin to 4-3 in the seventh, before a two-out RBI single from Adrian Spitz tied the game.

Bobby Moskow led off the eighth inning with a walk and used his speed to score the go-ahead run on a Bloodhound error. Elias followed with a two-RBI single to put the hosts up three.

Jarret Weiss, who entered the game in the seventh inning, retired the Bloodhounds in order in the ninth inning to help the Violets record their first Opening Day win in three seasons under Kimbler.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Zach Cohen, Ford Ladd and Weiss combined for 4.2 innings of shutout baseball out of the bullpen.

"Those guys got ahead of hitters," added Kimbler. "That's the easiest way to get guys out."

- The aforementioned trio of relievers combined with NYU starter Cameron Serapilio-Frank to strike out 11 John Jay batters.

- The Violets drew eight walks as Moskow and Grant Otto each recorded two in their NYU debuts.

- Jack Walter scored a pair of runs out of the leadoff spot in the Violet batting order.

"We still have plenty of work to do," concluded Kimbler. "Our goal is to keep getting better each time we take the field."

The Violets return to action against Rutgers University-Newark on Saturday, March 4, back at MCU Park. First pitch against the Scarlet Raiders is slated for 1:00pm.
