Men's Basketbal Falls to Stevens Tech

Violets Wrap Up Non-Conference Portion of Schedule

The New York University men's basketball team was defeated by Stevens Institute of Technology 88-79 in non-conference action on Tuesday, February 7, at NYU's Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

NYU (7-13) was outscored 9-2 in the opening 2:10, but used a 13-9 run over the next six minutes to cut the Stevens Tech (17-4) lead to three. That was as close as the Violets were able to get before the Ducks closed the half strong and led 50-37 at halftime.

The Ducks opened the second half with a three-pointer from Evan Klimchak to extend their lead to a game-high 16 points, but NYU answered with seven straight to cut into the Stevens Tech lead. The visitors were able to bring their lead up to 13 with 11:48 to play, however the Violets responded with a 10-0 run to make the score 69-66 with 9:10 on the clock.

NYU was not able to get within less than three and a late 9-2 Ducks' run put the game away for good.

The Violets struggled from the foul line, making just 7-of-15 (46.7%) from the charity stripe.

Douglas Gertner led all scorers with 25 points in the loss.

NOTABLES:

- Gertner established a career-high for the second-straight game. The sophomore was joined in double figures by Joe Timmes (17 points), Ross Udine (11 points) and Jimmy Martinelli (11 points).

"Doug is getting more and more comfortable in his role," said Assistant Coach Taylor Roth. "He worked really hard this offseason and the results are starting to show."

- Timmes grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.

- Udine dished out seven assists to go along with just three turnovers. The junior captain is now three assists shy of 400 for his career.

The Violets return to the court on Friday, February 10, in Cleveland, OH, when they take on University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off against the Spartans is slated for 8pm.
