The New York University women's basketball team suffered a 64-60 setback to host Case Western Reserve University on Friday evening, February 10, at Horsbourgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, OH.
Kayla Patterson scored the first two points of the game, but the Spartans responded and controlled most of the first half, leading 14-13 after the first quarter and 31-27 at halftime.
The Spartans led by a game-high 10 points, 31-21, with 3:07 left in the opening half, but the Violets used a 15-0 run bridging the second and third quarters to go ahead by five less than two minutes into the third quarter.
"We switched up our defense and came up with some big rebounds during that span," said NYU Head Coach
Lauren Hall-Gregory. "We were also able to get out into transition, which is key for us."
The squads traded the lead four times throughout the second half before a Jess McCoy jumper gave the Case the lead for good with 2:09 left. The Spartans drained three foul shots in the final minute and got critical defensive stops to earn the victory.
Kara Hageman scored 22 points for Case to lead all scorers.
The Violets were led by Patterson and
Amy Harioka, who each finished with 14 points.
NOTABLES:
- Patterson, who was 5-of-6 from the field, grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
-
Liv Linebarger (13 points) and
Shaye McGoey (12) also finished in double-figures for NYU. Linebarger also added seven rebounds.
- McGoey dished out a game-high-tying five assists. The freshman played all 40 minutes.
"We just have to continue to focus on the next game," concluded Hall-Gregory.
The Violets return to the court Sunday for their final road game of the year at Carnegie Mellon University. Tip-off in Pittsburgh, PA, is slated for 2:00pm.
