The New York University women's volleyball team opened up play at the 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, which is being held on Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4, at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
NYU (10-22) was seeded seventh and fell to second-seeded Washington University in St. Louis in straight sets (25-13, 25-21, 25-9) in the opening round. The Violets then took on sixth-seeded University of Rochester in the consolation bracket and were defeated in four sets (26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17).
WashU (22-9) scored eight of the first nine points to set the tone in the quarterfinal match. The Bears never looked back, attacking at a .381 clip en route to the decisive victory. It was their second three-set victory over the Violets this season.
NYU's match against the Yellowjackets (19-12) was much closer as the squads split the first two sets before Rochester took the match over in the third and fourth.
The Violets led the opening set 23-22, but were unable to close as Rochester scored four of the next five points to come from behind and go ahead 1-0. The second frame saw the Violets go ahead 6-3 and lead by as many as five (19-14) en route to a four-point victory to tie the match at one apiece. The third and fourth sets were dominated by the Yellowjackets, however, as the Violets fell by nine and eight points, respectively.
Earlier this season, NYU fell in straight sets to Rochester.
