Women's Basketball Falls at Brandeis to Open UAA

Judges Begin Game with 20-2 Run

The New York University women's basketball team fell to Brandeis University 57-43 on Saturday, January 7, in both teams' University Athletic Association (UAA) opener in Waltham, MA.

The Violets (9-2) fell behind quickly, as the Judges (9-3) opened the game on a 20-2 run.

NYU senior captain Lindsey Oldshue closed the first quarter with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the gap to 20-7 after the first 10 minutes.

Playing from behind throughout, NYU's offense picked up a bit in the second quarter. The Violets' other senior captain, Amy Harioka, scored five points in the session and helped NYU pull to within 13 before settling for a 34-20 deficit at halftime.

The Violets pulled to within nine on several occasions in the fourth quarter. Junior Kayla Patterson's layup with 5:41 left made the score 44-35, but NYU never got any closer.

"We were not ready to play and they were," said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

- Freshman Shaye McGoey scored a team-high 13 points and added a career-high eight assists.

- Harioka finished with nine points.

- Junior Cassidy Fontana led NYU with six rebounds.

"Our job now is to move forward," Hall-Gregory added. "You learn from this game. Our next focus is Cortland State."

NYU returns to action in a home match-up at the Sportsplex against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on Monday, January 9. Tipoff for the Violets' final non-conference game of the season is set for a 3:00 pm matinee.
