The New York University softball team defeated Brandeis University in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30, at the Bahoshy Softball Complex in the Bronx, NY.
In the first contest, the Violets (23-15) defeated the Judges (16-19) by a score of 11-0 in five innings.
Diana King took the circle for NYU and tossed four shutout innings of two-hit ball, striking out four.
Samantha Block pitched a hitless fifth and struck out one batter.
Ashley Mains starred for the Violets in game one, collecting five RBIs. The freshman opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. She then delivered the big blow of a six-run second inning, smacking a three-run triple to left center to put the Violets ahead 8-0.
In game two,
Cassi Parulis started and allowed three runs on five hits, striking out one.
Mains continued her hot hitting with a two-run ground rule double to put NYU ahead 2-0.
"Ashley had a lot of big hits today and drove in a lot of runs," said Head Coach
Now-Allah James. "She was locked in today."
Kahala Bonsignore added a two-run double of her own to give the Violets a 6-1 advantage in the second.
Up 10-3 after the fourth inning, the Violets appeared to be headed for a second mercy-rule win of the afternoon. However, Brandeis mounted a comeback and closed the gap to three runs before
Sage Scheiwiller's RBI single put the game out of reach in the sixth.
NYU has now won 10 of their last 11 games.
"We've been doing all the little things, like getting timely hits and good baserunning" explained James. "They've put in a lot of work this season and they should be proud of what they've accomplished."
Prior to the doubleheader, there was a ceremony to honor NYU's three graduating players: Bonsignore, Block and
Jacqueline Tremblay.
"The seniors helped build the foundation for what we are seeing today," continued James. "They were the starting point for the program and should be proud of their accomplishments."
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

Dakota Damiani was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- Bonsignore was 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

Carina Sturm hit her first-career home run and went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
- Scheiwiller was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Val Schwein was 2-for-3 with a ground-rule double and two runs scored.
The Violets return to action tomorrow for another doubleheader against Brandeis, which will take place at Bahoshy starting at 12 pm.
