Baseball Falls in Slugfest to Brandeis

Violets Defeated 11-9 on the Road

The New York University baseball team was defeated 11-9 in the finale of a three-game series with Brandeis University on Sunday, April 17 in Waltham, MA.

Cameron Serapilio-Frank started the game on the mound for the Violets. The right-hander gave up four earned runs on nine hits in four innings.

"Cam tried to battle through with his pitching today," said Head Coach Doug Kimbler. "In a game like this, you need to throw strikes and let your defense help."

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Colman Hendershot, Brandeis took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the second.

NYU countered with a three-run third inning. Hendershot came up and smacked a double for another RBI, after which Scott Hilbrandt and Michael Vokulich contributed RBI singles in the frame to regain a 4-2 lead.

After the Judges tied the score once again in the bottom of the third, Hendershot knocked in his third run of the game with a fourth-inning single. Another two runs crossed the plate for NYU in the following inning, giving the team their largest lead of the back-and-forth affair.

Brandeis responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, re-taking the 8-7 lead.

The Violets then took a 9-8 lead in the seventh as Jack Walter and Jonathan Iaione scored on a Brandeis error. However, NYU could not hold the advantage, yielding a tying double and a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.

"With a young team, we are trying to continue to learn our lessons," said Kimbler. "The biggest lesson that we have still yet to learn is that we need to put teams away. We let Brandeis hang around today and it came back to hurt us."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- NYU outhit Brandeis 17-13

- Hendershot went 4-6 with four RBIs.

"Colman has worked hard on his swing," continued Kimbler. "It is nice to see him get rewarded on a personal level for a game like today."

- Billy Griffo walked three times.

- CJ Picerni and Jake Smith both went 3-5, each scoring a run.

The Violets return to action on Thursday, April 21, for a home doubleheader against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. First pitch at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY, is set for 12:00 pm. Live stats will be available.
